New to VATSIM? If you are starting your journey and your goal is to become a Controller within the Edmonton FIR, you need to start with our Regional Division, VATCAN.
VATCAN’s membership department will take you through the first steps to eventually have you ready to challenge the S1 (Student 1) exam.
Once you have passed the S1 exam, you will be formally assigned the S1 Controller Rating, and you will then be requested to select the FIR where you want to control. At that point, the FIR you have selected will take you in and work with you through the S2 study material, written exams and finally, the OTS (Over the Shoulder), a live-on-the-network practical examination required for reaching the S2, S3 and C1 controller ratings.
For more information about the first steps described above, check out this post on VATCAN’s Forum
Existing Controllers: Want to Transfer to CZEG FIR?
If you are already a controller and want to make CZEG your new home, you need to formally request the transfer through your current Region or Division.
Check with your current local staff for assistance on how and where this process is detailed.
Once you have requested the transfer, CZEG FIR staff will be notified and a file will be opened.
Make sure you read CZEG’s Standard Operating Procedures (available here) to make sure Edmonton fulfills your expectations. These are our rules of engagement and we strive to abide by them.
Important Considerations: CZEG requests references for controllers wanting to call Edmonton FIR their new home. We are sure you understand why.
Hence it’s important that you advise your current FIR/ ARTCC Staff that Edmonton FIR will be reaching out to them asking for references of you.
We ask for references on team player approach, collaboration, controller skills, attitude, integrity, and respect for the leadership of the FIR/ ARTCC, and pilots and controllers of various skill levels and experience.
CZEG FIR Certification process: Having reached a certain controller rating and controller position on another FIR/ ARTCC does not mean you will start at the same level once you transfer to Edmonton FIR.
Upon receiving feedback from your references and deeming them satisfactory, CZEG FIR staff will coordinate a FIR Certification session with you to assess your overall controller skills (both hard and soft skills).
It’s based on the outcome of this session that you will be Cleared to Control a given position within the FIR. Once you have joined the team, we will work with you to provide the training and assistance required to get you through the ratings.
Adherence and observance to VATSIM’s Transfer and Visiting Controller Policy is required at all times.
Just Visiting? The process to become a visitor is similar to the transfer process outlined above (i.e. References, FIR Certification). The main difference is that formal training is not provided once accepted as Visitor to CZEG FIR.
Make sure you read CZEG’s Standard Operating Procedures (available here) to make sure Edmonton fulfills your expectations.
These are our rules of engagement and we strive to abide by them. Adherence and observance to VATSIM’s Transfer and Visiting Controller Policy is required at all times.
To apply, please send a note to our FIR Chief including the following information:
VATSIM CID #, Current FIR/ ARTCC, Current Controller Rating, Date Obtained, Hours logged since obtained and the Reason you want to become a visitor controller in CZEG FIR.
